Is My Boss Exploitating or Exposing Me?

In corporate employment, it is common for the seniors to delegate subordinate staff sometimes to the point where is becomes unfair. Have you heard about juniors who draft executive board papers, attend national meetings, drive corporate projects, etc. I know you have or even could be a victim of such occurrences. I have, and we see a lot of such in our African corporate companies. What comes to your mind when such things happen? What would make you make you think it is an exposure opportunity or exploitation? Let’s brainstorm some points that support each of these thoughts.

I would consider any assignment to be exposure if the following apply:

1. The assignment is relevant to your job

2. Notice of the assignment is given when there is still enough time to prepare

3. You are the only or one of the specialist on the subject assignment

4. You are aspiring for the position for which the assignment belong

5. The assignment has benefits such as documented credits for good performance, financial return in form of bonuses, it opens chances for a promotion or better employment opportunities, etc.

Opposites of the points above can be considered as exploitation. In addition to those are the following:

1. The boss is lazy to do the work

2. If poor performance on the assignment warrants a dismissal

3. All benefits will go to the boss and not for company

4. The assignment arises from poor performance of the boss

Points to each of these extreme opposites are many. I know you could come up with your own points that are even more than what I listed.

Let’s think together once again, if you happen to be a victim of exploitation what should you do? Do you reject the assignment, conveniently under perform to expose the boss, resign, or look for another job? The answer is simple – decide for that whose consequences you can take. What does this mean? Plan for the action you want to take, don’t be blind. How to Use Words Effectively for Real Business Success

As you know, the way you use words in your thoughts and what you say out loud can have a huge impact on how successful you are. This is because everyone has associations with the words that they use. So for example, one person will feel fine using the word ?rich? while another would find it offensive. But how can you use your words to create more business success?

First of all, you have to catch yourself saying or thinking the words that might be inadvertently limiting you. Examples of these are: problem, can’t, ought, should, wish, not fair.

You can train yourself to catch the words you use to describe situations by listening to yourself, and one of the best ways to do this is to talk out loud to yourself. OK, do it when you’re alone or you might get some funny looks! But seriously, talking out loud is a great way to find out what kinds of words you use. So next time you’re stumped in your business about what to do next, or you think you can’t see a way out of the situation you’re in, say out loud what you’re thinking, and listen to yourself.

Next step is to change whatever words you find that are limiting. Here’s some examples:

Change ‘struggling’ to ‘taking the next step’.

Replace ‘should’ with ‘could’.

Transform ‘I can’t’ to ‘I won’t’.

I need — do you really need? What about ‘I want’, or ‘I would like’ instead?

‘I ought to’ can become ‘I could’.

People who are ‘pains in the neck’ can become your ‘teachers’.

Instead of saying ‘I have to’, say ‘I get to’.   

Change ‘I wish’ to ‘I commit to’. (That’ll sort out whether you really want that thing you’re wishing for or not!).

Refer to problems or setbacks as opportunities or challenges.

Never demand anything — rather say ‘I would appreciate it if’.

Use the words ‘consequences from events’ rather than ‘failure’.

Change ‘this is no good’, to ‘what I find good in this is’.

Amend ‘It’s not fair’ (which is just another version of ‘poor me syndrome’) to focusing on what is great about your situation by saying ‘What I do have is’.

Try reading these words out loud right now and notice the difference in how they make you feel. This is not only because of the associations we have with different words, but also because of the vibration belonging to different words. You can hear it really clearly with the words I should as opposed to I could. The first one is about blaming, feeling bad, being stuck, while the second brings opportunity, hope and a way out.

It’s well known that success is at least 70% in the mind — so bring your thoughts and words in line with the success that you want in your life, and watch things starting to change!

In recent days oil market has witnessed surge in global oil price. Crude oil went to a two-month high on concern that U.S. refiners will fail to produce enough gasoline to keep up with peak demand this summer.
Short fall in supply of oil from Nigeria and uncertainty on Iranian nuclear issues is already keeping buyers of oil nervous. Delivery in May future hit $68 per barrel, a 20 pct jump from last years $56.5 per barrel, only $2.85 from August 2005 high’s of $70.85.
Since last 3 years oil market has been witnessing a substantial rise in the average price of oil. Last week number of oil analyst and agencies have one again raised their 2006 average forecast price to $63.
US Energy department Data reported that refineries are operating around 86 pct of their capacity. Analyst estimates that during same period last year, plants utilised 94 percent of their capacity. Not to forget that February, March & April are also crucial as all the maintenance work is done during these months.
There is difference of opinion as experts differ on whether the current soaring oil demand will outstrip the current supplies, and how quickly.
But for oil watchers, what could be more concerning is that if the current surging demand from China and India persists then Saudi Arabia, which has a known 25% global oil reserve, may see its oil reserves dwindle in twenty years time. The country has the ability to produce 15 million barrels per day. Middle Eastern Oil analyst is of view that if Saudi Arabia produces 15 mbp, the lifespan of Saudi Arabia’s proven oil reserve of 260 billion barrel, 100 billion has already been used and therefore the reserves can be used in our lifetimes.
Meanwhile, last year’s impact of five major hurricane hitting United States of America still has the biting effect on the oil industry. Coastal oil refineries are still fighting to deliver maximum production.
Developing oil sands or natural gas-based diesel fuel is slower and more expensive proposition, though researchers are making every effort to produce an alternate to counter oil price.
US President George W Bush in his one of his State Union address in February, called for intense effort to develop more efficient fuel sources. The US Energy Department and the Agriculture Department spend tens of millions of dollars every year on biomass-based energy research and development. This is in addition to the billions of dollars. More than $4 billion was spent in 2004.The U.S. provides in subsidies for the production of corn, from which most domestically produce ethanol is derived.
Considering how ethanol is produced, corn or sugarcane is grown, harvested and delivered to an ethanol plant. Growing and harvesting the corn and heating the reheating the fermented corn of sugarcane to produce ethanol of a high quality to replace some of the gasoline in car requires enormous amount of energy.
According to researchers, it was found that it takes 30 pct more energy to top make ethanol from corn. Wood biomass takes 55 pct more energy. Swiss grass takes about 50 pct. Ethanol is just highly uneconomical product in the West, as compared in developing countries, also due to low labour wages. It also contributes to air pollution. Cars running on gasoline containing ethanol produce more air pollution than cars running gasoline alone.
Another research work on Pig manure is underway. One pig produces 10 pounds of manure to yield up to 21 gallon of crude oil. Hence, it is estimated manure from America’s 60 million pigs could produce 50 million barrels of oil a year. Framers can earn $10 per pig from manure.
There are all very expensive propositions. The researchers would continue to search for oil alternate, but substitute for oil may still be far away. With current pace of global growth, thirst for economic boom and demand incurring due to population explosion is unending.
I have very few reasons to believe that oil prices will fall to USD 50 per barrel and would rather like to argue that we would continue to see higher oil price trend. Without which search for new oil find could not be met due to high exploration cost. Oil price could also be kept high intentionally, to give investors incentive to explore oil and to developed alternate fuel find which requires billions of Dollars. With growing annual demand for 2 million barrel per day, most of it coming from Asia, one single event that disrupts oil production could send prices sky rocketing. Current demand for global oil is 84 million barrel per day. I expect the oil to trade in a USD 75-80 range in a short span of time. Not long ago talking of oil price averaging USD 60 was a sin. During recessions, when everyone else is cutting back on marketing expenditure and research and development efforts, the wisest companies continue to invest in these. They are often able to do so because they managed their businesses prudently during easier times, keeping costs under control and building a valuable war chest. This makes sense, as during a recession money goes further, as suppliers cut costs, and are ready to make deals. For those with available resources, this can be a great time to get acquisitive. Sadly most firms work the other way round, spending freely in good times and then savagely cutting costs when times get tough.

Lavish time and effort on customers
For those companies or small businesses that haven’t built up a war chest, there are still great opportunities. What they lack in funds they can make up in time and effort, by lavishing attention on customers. This means spending time to listen to them and find out how to serve them better; to get them to collaborate in dreaming up new products or solutions; to look for ways to offer them more value, rather than lower prices and to find ways to lock in their loyalty.

Keep on advertising
Advertising and marketing is often the first spending victim of recessionary cost-cutting. It is such an easy budget to slash, but you do so at your peril. Look for ways to use the money more efficiently, to seek out better deals and to try new approaches, but NEVER stop communicating with your target market. If your competitors cut back their spending, rub your hands with glee and see it as a golden opportunity to gain share at their expense. In a normal market, marketing is often a game of ‘tit for tat’ that makes it hard to gain ground and often results in standoff. In recessionary times, you can find yourself on an empty dance floor with the audience’s eyes trained on you alone. Go for it!
